Algoz

14 Kilometres from the castle town of Silves and 7 kilometres from the coast is the delightful little town of Algoz. The name is apparently derived from the Arabic word “Al-Guzz” an Asian warrior tribe that is supposed to have settled there during the 12th century. Originally it was just a farming community with cereal mills, wine and olive oil presses which naturally processed local farm produce giving employment to the local population. Although there is still some farming activity today, the majority of employment comes from the manufacture of ceramic products, which can be found in all the local shops and potteries. There are two churches in Algoz, one of which is a national monument – the little Church of Our Lady of Pilar. It is located at the top of a hill with stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The Main church is also worth a visit to appreciate the Manueline style masonary. Algoz is a popular town with locals and visitors alike, there are some good inexpensive restaurants and several bars. There is a produce market, which is open six days a week also a larger market once a month with everything from linens to antiques.
