Heading west from Albufeira along the N125 is the town of Porches, it is about halfway between Alcantarilha and Lagoa, and only a few kilometres from the sea. Porches is famous for its hand-made pottery, there are several places to choose from but by far the most popular is “Porches Pottery” which has its own distinctive style. It was founded by Irishman Patrick Swift in order to ensure the craft and designs of the Algarve were
preserved. The delightful setting for this industry is an old farmhouse with courtyard garden and fish pond just off the N125. You can browse through the well-stocked shop, watch the artists at work or enjoy refreshments in the little restaurant which adjoins the showroom. The town itself has a variety of local shops, pasteralias and good restaurants. In the tiny churchyard 
across the road from the church in the centre of town can be found the final resting place of Patrick Swift who died in 1983.
